Indianapolis Colts Priority Undrafted Free Agents
Although the NFL lockout will keep teams from pursuing undrafted free agents following the 2011 NFL Draft, one can be sure that teams are hard at work coming up with a list of players they want to call when the lockout if lifted. For the Indianapolis Colts, there are a few positions they probably would like to grab a few players to compete during summer activities and training camp — assuming either actually happen. This list will be comprised of players Coltzilla feels are in the highest need areas on the team, players the team met prior to the draft — who have historically been free agent signings — and players who are the most talented signing possibilities. Check out the list after the jump.
*Bumping this story because free agency is going to be a whirlwind process this year and it will likely happen within the next couple of weeks.

Only guys I would add to that list are WR Dane Sanzenbacher (I know he wouldn’t break into the roster with Collie and Gonzo there, but we could have really used a pure slot receiver last year after both guys went down) and LB Mark Herzlich.
Sanzenbacher is a pure slot receiver with great route skills and good hands, but as I said, he wouldn’t make the team behind Gonzo and Collie.
Herzlich is still recovering from cancer, but the guy was considered on of the best LBs in the country as a sophomore. He didn’t even do too badly last year all in all. Honestly, I’m of the opinion we should bring the guy in and work him out after the lockout resolves itself. Even if he never gets back to where he was the guy would probably end up being a beast of a ST player, and we could always use more LBs.
Oh, forgot another guy. RB Noel Devine. Tiny guy. Actually quite the opposite of Carter. He’s like 5’8 and 170 lbs but he’s really fast and slippery. He’s a good receiver, and an avid blocker (albeit lacking in physical size to be much more than a chip blocker). As an UDFA I don’t see why he shouldn’t get some chances. Worst that could happen is that he doesn’t make the team, but if he can compete as a returner, or even potentially give us yet another alternative to Brown and sit him on the PS to develop he’d be worth the consideration.
John Clay out Wisconsin is a back that has impressed me over the last couple of years. I wouldn’t mind seeing Indianapolis take a run at signing him.
If we don’t get a S via free agency, Joe Lefeged always caught my eye as a good fit/project guy who could grow behind a starter for a year or so. Would probably help a lot on ST as well. Great re-cap of UDFAs though
