Colts v. New England – Another Instant Classic?

Nov 17th

Reggie Wayne's game-winning touchdown catch over the Patriots in 2009.

No rivalry sticks out more in the NFL over the last decade than the one between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.  As fate would have it, the two teams would meet in 2003, 2004, and 2006 for big-time playoff games.  The Colts lost to the Patriots in the 2003 AFC Championship game.  Again the Colts lost in the 2004 Divisional Round when the two teams were considered the best in football.  Finally, the Colts defeated the Patriots in the AFC Championship game, prior to winning Super Bowl XLI.

From 2000-2004 the Patriots owned the head-to-head record 6-1.  Since that time, the Colts are 5-1, including wins in Foxborough in 2005 and 2006.  This is the first time since the regular season in 2006, when the Colts hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, that the two teams met at Gillette Stadium.  Two of the teams’ last four games have been won by miraculous or historic comebacks by the Colts. Understanding Holding Penalties in the NFL

Nov 16th

One of the most discussed penalties each week in the NFL is holding.  Fans for teams like the Colts who have dynamic pass rushing defensive ends and linebackers are more likely to constantly discuss and complain about players like Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis getting illegally held by opposing offensive linemen who attempt to slow their progress to the quarterback.

The problem is that most fans are not really clear on what offensive linemen are able to do with their hands in the process of blocking pass rushers (sometimes it seems like the officials are unsure too).  Accordingly, debates ensue between fans from the competing teams about whether or not the outcome of the game was impacted by poor officiating that would have otherwise resulted in sacks, turnovers, changes of possession, and would have turned the tide of a game. After Review: Bengals v. Colts

Dhani Jones: Oh look, something I can grab onto. (Brent Smith | Reuters)

It was a frustrating game for Colts fans, who saw their defense force five turnovers and never had the luxury of feeling like the game was completely in hand.  When the Colts led early by 17, conventional wisdom would have said that Indianapolis would win the game for sure, based upon the theory that down two scores to the Colts at any point in the game is a losing proposition for any team.

There is a problem with that theory right now, and that problem is that the Colts today are not the Colts when they were healthy and with all of their starters on the field.  Add into this that the Colts played very conservative with key players throughout much of the game, including limiting Freeney and Mathis’ snaps throughout much of the second and third quarters, and the Bengals were given an opportunity to keep the game close. Bengals 17, Colts 23 – Quick Reaction

Kelvin Hayden returns another interception for a touchdown. (Brent Smith | Reuters)

The Indianapolis Colts (6-3) managed to survive against the Cincinnati Bengals (2-7) on Sunday, and in doing so, grabbed sole possession of first place in the AFC South.  The Colts started fast, and appeared poised to run the Bengals out of the building, but inconsistency from the offensive line, a Carson Palmer trip to a time machine, and yet another officiating blunder allowed the Bengals an opportunity to steal a win at the end of the game.  Jump for my quick thoughts on today’s game.

Week 10 Inactives: Bengals @ Colts.

Nov 14th

The following players have had a determination made concerning their availability in today’s matchup of the Indianapolis Colts vs. the Cincinnati Bengals.

Joseph Addai - INACTIVE: Continues to rehab from the same injury that put Devin Moore in Injured Reserve

Austin Collie – INACTIVE: While he has improved through the week, the team is not wanting to rush him with a severe concussion.

Mike Hart – INACTIVE: Still no real time-line for Hart’s return, and no changes are forthcoming today.

Brody Eldridge – ACTIVE: Eldridge will return to the field as the starting TE, and may see even more work with no available slot receivers.

Gary Brackett – INACTIVE: Brackett spent the week sitting out of practice and will not play, meaning Pat Angerer will do a position swap yet again.

Clint Session – INACTIVE: Session continues to heal after breaking his arm and dislocating his elbow in Week 8.  Tyjuan Hagler is expected to start.

Blair White – INACTIVE: White injured himself during the week, and the Colts have brought up 2 WRs from the practice squad to add depth.

Jerraud Powers – ACTIVE: Powers returns to the lineup, helping to solidify the secondary just in time against a revitalized Terrell Owens.

Jacob Tamme – ACTIVE: Tamme will be active, and may end up seeing significant time in the slot with neither WRs James or Brooks looking particularly hopeful in the position in previous experiences.

Bob Sanders – INACTIVE: Sanders continues to rehab from a ruptured Bicep.

Justin Tryon – INACTIVE: Tryon is also recovering from an injury sustained in the week 8 matchup against Houston.

Defending Freeney and Mathis

Nov 14th

It has come to my attention that Eagles fan Kyle Dwyer, also known as d-jackfan10 on BleedingGreenNation.com, has become frustrated with Colts’ fans’ comments regarding the regular uncalled holds on defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.  It is Kyle’s contention that the Colts are crying over spilled milk, that Colts’ fans’ interpretations are jaded by homeristic glasses coated by the blind opinion that Freeney and Mathis are better players than they actually are.

Kyle took it so far as to create two YouTube videos with every offensive and defensive play for each team to display the differences and to support the conclusion that Trent Cole is actually a better defensive end than Dwight Freeney.  I examine both videos after the jump and break down the holds, chips, and double teams in each. What Peyton Manning is Doing (and how to beat him)

Nov 14th

Scott Bolander of Blue Sunday blog wrote a story detailing how Peyton Manning and the Colts offense operates.  It is rather long and in-depth, and provides a thorough explanation and understanding.  You will find a preview below and I strongly encourage that each of our visitors give the full story a read at Blue Sunday.  The story is a rare masterpiece and Coltzilla would like to congratulate and support Scott’s work.  Very well done Mr. Bolander.

As a fan, retired player, or a member of the media, whatever you think you know about how the Colts offense works is probably mostly incorrect.  This excludes some players or coaches who have regularly played against the Colts.

Here is how it goes:

Clyde Christensen calls in “concepts / ideas” based on the personnel grouping as well as the gameplan developed in concert with Manning and Tom Moore during the practice week.
Generally the personnel grouping (either 2 WRs & 2 TEs, or 3 WRs & 1 TE) at the start of the drive will be chosen based on consensus between Manning, Moore, and Christensen.  Sometimes different groupings will be sent in by Christensen during the course of a drive.  Occasionally Manning disagrees with the choices made for subs and will wave incoming players back to the sidelines.
