Navigating the Colts 2011 Off-Season
Jan 7th
Although the Colts are heading into the playoffs and will not have to worry about new contracts, free agency, and draft planning until after their playoff run ends, once it does things will start happening fast. With all of the players who have contracts ending this season, it will be important to make good choices in order to keep a very talented football team intact.
One thing about any off-season is the chance that difficult decisions will have to be made about players for whom fans have a great deal of loyalty. That is the unfortunate nature of the business of football and those kinds of decisions and observations will be included in what this writer believes is the best direction for the Colts leading up to the 2011 season.
The most important thing to do to start this process is to identify which players require new contracts in order to play football in 2011, and which players currently have contracts that are not reflective of their value to the team.
The players who will need new contracts in order to return to the Colts in 2011 are listed below, by position. More >
Why the Colts Future is not in Doubt
Dec 2nd
15 comments
With Indianapolis struggling recently, a lot of fans are questioning the team’s future. Many complain about recent drafts and believe the young talent will be incapable of replacing the perennial Pro Bowl and future Hall of Fame talent that is starting to age.
This negative perspective is premature. As long as Peyton Manning is healthy and playing at a very high level in the NFL, the Colts future is safe. With that in mind, it makes sense to focus on the players who represent the team’s future, consider their talent level, and where that talent can take the Colts moving forward. More >
2010 Colts Defensive Tackles are Overlooked and Underrated
Dec 1st
5 comments
The Colts defensive tackles are one of the most overlooked and underrated units in the league. First-year starter Fili Moala is having a solid year and showing signs of a bright future. Second-year starter Daniel Muir has had some struggles but has also made some big plays. For a second week in a row, Mookie Johnson made big plays — he stuffed a run and was in on a sack. Eric Foster is having the best year of his career and offers a legitimate pass rush threat and penetration from the defensive tackle spot.
The point is, most Colts fans and most NFL talking heads don’t ever hear or talk about the Colts defensive tackles because they’re rarely a problem. Our linebackers, corners, and defensive ends have been more inconsistent than our defensive tackles. With Aaron Francisco thrust into a starting role, it’s fair to say the safeties are also a bigger weakness right now. More >
Colts v. Patriots: Are You Ready?
Nov 21st
There are too many reasons to watch this game to list in a single story. The Patriots and Colts games have been the best spanning a decade. Their rivalry is matched by no other sports rivalry in professional sports. Why?
When Peyton Manning joined the Indianapolis Colts, the blue faithful in Indianapolis had a collective sigh of relief. Finally their football team was destined for league-wide relevance. The team would go from a commonly mocked, sadly defeated bastion of under-performance and bad luck, to a NFL powerhouse almost over night. More >
Texans v. Colts, And Things of that Nature (Week 8 Preview)
Oct 31st
It is said that men are measured not in times of prosperity, but in periods of adversity. If true, the Indianapolis Colts (4-2), who have decided to go as a MASH unit for Halloween, will be measured in front of a national audience when they host the Houston Texans (4-2) on Monday Night Football.
The Colts, who often find themselves among the most injured teams in the NFL, have taken injury-depletion to a new level in 2010. Players out due to injury for Monday night’s game are: safeties Bob Sanders and Melvin Bullitt (season-ending injured reserve), wide receiver Austin Collie, defensive tackle Antonio Johnson, linebacker Kavell Conner, tight end Dallas Clark (season-ending injured reserve), running back Joseph Addai, and corner back Jacob Lacey.
The walking wounded could potentially be joined on the sidelines by running back Donald Brown and corner back Jerraud Powers. Fans interested in obtaining the autographs of Colts players may want to wear doctors or nurse costumes.
Making matters worse for the Colts is the current playoff picture. Entering Week 8 the Colts are eighth in the tight AFC standings which feature nine teams with .500 or better records. That, combined with the Colts’ two losses in conference and division, and you have what feels like a must-win game if the Colts hope to control their own fate come December. More >

After Review: Colts v. Redskins (Week 6)
Oct 18th
The Indianapolis Colts managed to defeat the Washington Redskins on the road 27-24 in a contest that really should not have been as close as the final score. Four fumbles in the game, including three lost, gave Washington opportunities that would have otherwise reduced their likelihood to put points on the board and would have given an Indianapolis offense that was having its way with a Redskins defense more opportunities to score.
The Colts defense had two glaring difficulties – tackling and a soft middle zone – but also showed signs of dominating the game in other ways. Which leads the Colts to head home once again looking to find consistency, their true identity, and to figure out how they will play the rest of the season to end up back in the playoffs. More >
Colts Safety Melvin Bullitt Out for Season
Oct 5th
No comments
that Melvin Bullitt broke a bone in his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the 2010 season. It goes without saying that the Colts started the year with the strongest and deepest safety group in the NFL only to have two major injuries leaving the unit depleted. Back-up veteran safety DaJuan Morgan and rookie cornerback conversion Brandon King, who has missed time to a hamstring injury, are the only safeties currently on the roster behind Pro Bowl free safety Antoine Bethea.
Look for the Colts to sign a veteran to replace Bullitt sometime very soon. While Colts fans entered the season hopeful that the Indy injury curse would end, the opposite has happened. To this point in the young season a grand total of eight starting caliber players have missed time, with numerous key backups having their seasons end prematurely. Will provide more information as it is available.
Colts Perennial Pro Bowl Defensive End Dwight Freeney Unhappy with Peter King
Sep 24th

Phil B. Wilson of IndyStar.com wrote a story outlining Dwight Freeney’s disgust with Peter King, who failed to list Freeney amongst the top five most feared pass rushers in the NFL in 2010 and beyond. While it is silly for any NFL writer to leave Freeney off of this list, which Dwight makes clear on his own, it is encouraging to think that the Colts all-time sacks leader has one more reason to go out on the field and prove something.
“When you put Brian Orakpo — and nothing against the guy, he is 24 — but mention him over me, that hurts your credibility as an analyst. I know who Peter King is. But to mention (Orakpo) over me? For him not to mention me in the top five, that is an insult. What he needs to do is ask the people around the league in a poll, all of the offensive coordinators and all of the offensive tackles. Ask them: ‘Give me the top five pass rushers.’ If I’m not mentioned in the top five by almost all of those guys, then I’m wrong. Tell (King) to do more research and ask around before he publishes that… he should be better than that.”
This should be the last thing Denver Broncos fans, or Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton, would want to see before they meet the Colts in Mile High Stadium on Sunday.
