Succeeding in Face of Injuries is Par for Colts Course
Oct 26th
Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. It is often said that “NFL” stands for “Not For Long,” and this idea flies in the face of teams who have had sustained success, particularly in the salary cap era. Somehow, someway, the Indianapolis Colts are a team that have found a way to be nearly immune to the forces at play in professional football that exist to make it next to impossible for teams to dominate.
If the Colts are going to continue their success in 2010, it has become clear that they will have to overcome a rash of injuries to key players. In some ways, the task seems insurmountable. The likelihood that the Colts can maintain their record of consecutive 12-win seasons shrinks by the week and by the day. How or why should fans expect the streak to continue, foresee a playoff berth, or have even a shroud of hope that the Colts could actually compete for another chance to play for a world championship?
The reason is pretty easy to locate. Over the last five years the Colts have had to overcome adversity, perform in the face of obvious team weaknesses, and have regularly been considered one of the best teams in the league — and one of the top contenders to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. In all but one of those years they have dealt with the loss of key players for dozens of games. Take a look. More >

2009 Game Recap – Week 7: Indianapolis Colts at St. Louis Rams
Jul 28th

To help pass time this off-season, I’ve reviewed the Colts’ regular season games from 2009. With this second look at how the team played, a few thoughts have occured to me which were not obvious during the initial viewing, and I thought it a good opportunity to rethink some of my previously held opinions of the team I love. So, with your kind indulgence, as I view a game at a time I’ll be sharing my impressions.
Personal Note: This is not, and was never intended to be, an objective, unbiased review of an NFL contest. It is instead a glimpse into the emotional ride experienced by the average Colt fan at game time. My Homerism switch is engaged and turned up to eleven. With that in mind, I invite you to join me as we re-live the highs and lows of the 2009 Indianapolis Colts season.
Today’s Game: Week 7 – Indianapolis Colts at St. Louis Rams
Setting The Stage
- The Colts come off the bye week with a record of 5-0 and as one of four undefeated teams. Rams quarterback Marc Bulger and running back Steven Jackson lead the Rams who have lost 16 straight. Bob Sanders starts after missing the first 5 games with a knee injury. Charlie Johnson returns after missing the Titans game, and Matt Stover is signed to replace Adam Vinatieri, who had knee surgery. Kelvin Hayden returns, and Dan Muir gets the start, replacing Ed Johnson who was cut over the bye week. Chad Simpson returns and will field kickoffs. Mike Pollak starts and will once again alternate series with Kyle Devan.
- The Field: Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, Missouri
- The Crowd: It looks like a sell-out, and the crowd is loud early on and raised the volume when prompted by Laurenitis (rookie, Ohio state). St. Louis isn’t that far from Indianapolis, so there are quite a few Colts fans, sporting blue.

Do the Indianapolis Colts have the Best Wide Receivers in the NFL?
Jul 8th

The storyline behind the Indianapolis Colts’ wide receivers is nearly as surprising as the defensive tackle position. Just one season ago, many pundits foretold the downfall of the Colts, due in part to the loss of future Hall of Fame receiver Marvin Harrison. Now, the Colts have arguably the most talented group of receivers in the NFL.
When Anthony Gonzalez went down with an MCL tear on the first offensive play of the regular season, it would have been easy to write the season off. No, not pack things in and hope to go .500, but suggesting in that moment that the Colts offense would be able to produce at levels capable of helping the team nearly go undefeated and reach the Super Bowl? Not a chance.

2010 State of the Colts Franchise: Offense
Jul 4th

With organized team activities complete and nearly a month remaining before the start of training camp, I thought it might be useful to take a look at the “State of the Franchise,” position-by-position, on both sides of the ball. Fans can then figure out what “needs”, if any, the Colts still have as a team and speculate about potential free agent signings, which will be possible on July 22nd (when the final eight rule exclusion expires), before training and preseason arrives.

Reggie Wayne has become the Colts unquestioned number one option at receiver. He has had the opportunity to learn and develop with future Hall of Fame receiver Marvin Harrison and surpassed him as the Colts unofficial top receiving threat sometime between late 2006 and early 2007. The thing is, that is not a slight to Marvin Harrison at all, as Wayne has become one of the most reliable receivers in the NFL. He led the NFL in receiving yards in 2007 and finished third in the same statistic in 2005. He has also finished in the top five in receptions in the NFL two out of the last three years. More >

If not for a knee injury in December, which would later get aggravated during practice leading up to the Super Bowl, all signs would indicate the he will continue to rise as a player. Assuming that he will not have further injuries with his knee, there is no reason to believe that he does not have another two or three seasons of league-dominating performances in his career. The threat of getting torched by Wayne played no small part in allowing young receivers Austin Collie and Pierre Garçon develop during the 2009 season, development that helped both young players have extremely productive playoff performances and helped the Colts make it to the Super Bowl for just the second time since the franchise has been in Indianapolis.
Wayne is known as one of Peyton Manning’s primary targets near the end zone, has earned a reputation as one of the league’s most talented route-runners, and one of the most difficult receivers to defend in the NFL. He is also one of the team’s most vocal leaders and typically enters each training camp with a theme for the coming season. True to form, in 2009 Wayne arrived at training camp in a dump truck with a hard hat declaring Super Bowl under construction. When asked by the media what job he had for Wayne Construction, Wayne explained that he would probably be considered a janitor. His work ethic, diligent training in Miami each year, and uncanny relationship with Manning make him a force to be reckoned and a name to be feared every Sunday.

Breakout Radar: Austin Collie
Jun 2nd

There has been a great deal of discussion and debate regarding the future of the Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver position. Anthony Gonzalez is returning from injury and was previously the second receiver on the depth chart, lining up opposite Reggie Wayne on the right side of the field. After he went down to injury, he was replaced by Pierre Garçon, who went on to impress with his strength and speed, giving the Colts a deep threat option which it has lacked since Marvin Harrison was healthy.
To make the issue more complicated, fourth round draft pick Austin Collie was extremely successful as a rookie, collecting 60 passes for 676 yards and seven touchdowns in the 2009 regular season. In the playoffs he was even more deadly when hauled in 17 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Needless to say, Collie developed a great deal as a player in his rookie season and established himself as one of Peyton Manning’s trusted targets.
