In the Training Room: Colts LB Clint Session

One of the break-out players in Monday night’s game against the Texans was Clint Session, who had eight tackles, a pass defensed, and a ribcage rattling sack on Houston QB Matt Schaub that I honestly thought would send Schaub to the bench. Eight minutes into the 2nd quarter, Session stood in front of a rushing Andre Johnson, who juked just enough that Session’s arm was caught awkwardly in the tackle. The result was a dislocated elbow and fractured forearm. In the Training Room takes a look at the injury and whether there is hope that Session can return this season.

After Review: Texans v. Colts

The Indianapolis Colts won convincingly against the visiting Houston Texans. The surprising part of the victory is that it was without key players like Joseph Addai, Jerraud Powers, Dallas Clark, and Austin Collie. During the course of the game, rookie tight end Brody Eldridge left the game due to injury, first-time starting running back Mike Hart hurt his ankle in the fourth quarter, and wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez took a hard hit on the sideline, which kept him from finishing the game.
The game had major contributions from players like Hart, who ran for 84 yards on 12 carries (7.0 yards per carry) and caught all three of the passes his way for an additional 19 yards. He had the best game of his career and was on pace to break the 100-yard rushing mark. Cornerback Justin Tryon got his first start with the Colts for Jerraud Powers. Pat Angerer started his first game at strong-side linebacker in place of Philip Wheeler. Jacob Tamme got his first career start for the injured Dallas Clark and managed 64 yards on 6 receptions, out of 9 targets, and his first NFL touchdown. Even rookie Jerry Hughes saw his first action, got his first NFL tackle, and a quarterback hurry. More >

Texans v. Colts, And Things of that Nature (Week 8 Preview)

It is said that men are measured not in times of prosperity, but in periods of adversity. If true, the Indianapolis Colts (4-2), who have decided to go as a MASH unit for Halloween, will be measured in front of a national audience when they host the Houston Texans (4-2) on Monday Night Football.
The Colts, who often find themselves among the most injured teams in the NFL, have taken injury-depletion to a new level in 2010. Players out due to injury for Monday night’s game are: safeties Bob Sanders and Melvin Bullitt (season-ending injured reserve), wide receiver Austin Collie, defensive tackle Antonio Johnson, linebacker Kavell Conner, tight end Dallas Clark (season-ending injured reserve), running back Joseph Addai, and corner back Jacob Lacey.
The walking wounded could potentially be joined on the sidelines by running back Donald Brown and corner back Jerraud Powers. Fans interested in obtaining the autographs of Colts players may want to wear doctors or nurse costumes.
Making matters worse for the Colts is the current playoff picture. Entering Week 8 the Colts are eighth in the tight AFC standings which feature nine teams with .500 or better records. That, combined with the Colts’ two losses in conference and division, and you have what feels like a must-win game if the Colts hope to control their own fate come December. More >

Behind Enemy Lines: Houston Texans

“Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. This phrase was coined by a famous Chinese military strategist and philosopher named Sun-Tzu. Essentially, what Sun-Tzu was trying to say is to always keep tabs on your enemy so you will be prepared to face whatever they will throw at you.
In the NFL teams are always changing, for better or worse. One season, a team could be 12-4, the next, they have a top ten selection in the NFL draft. However, you would rather be safe than sorry in this league. Underestimating a team based on previous performance is a risky proposition. Last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers were stunned as they lost to the then lowly 4-8 Oakland Raiders. To ensure this does not happen to the Colts, we will examine each opponent week by week. We’ll start with the Texans.

NFL Quarterback Fantasy Rankings

Welcome to the first part of a four part series that will preview fantasy rankings for the upcoming NFL season. Each part will rank the top 15 players at specific offensive positions (QB, RB, WR, and TE) needed for fantasy football.
Part One: Quarterbacks – It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a football!
Quarterbacks may be the face of the franchise in the NFL but when it comes to fantasy football they’re usually overlooked and running backs become the “sexy position.” That being said, QBs are able to have just as much of an impact as RBs do. Last season, the top 15 QBs averaged 234 fantasy points while the top 15 RBs averaged 196 fantasy points. This just shows that picking the right QB is imperative to your fantasy team’s success. Looking forward to 2010, there are a number of elite QBs in the league ready to torture defenses while there are few more ready to try and do the same. The big question for fantasy enthusiasts this off-season has been who will be the number one fantasy QB in 2010? Could it be Drew Brees? Maybe it’s a Manning? Can Aaron Rodgers reclaim the crown, or will it be someone entirely different? Let’s take a look at my top 15 ranked QBs heading into the 2010 season:

To help pass time this off-season, I’ve reviewed the Colts’ regular season games from 2009. With this second look at how the team played, a few thoughts have occured to me which were not obvious during the initial viewing, and I thought it a good opportunity to rethink some of my previously held opinions of the team I love. So, with your kind indulgence, as I view a game at a time I’ll be sharing my impressions.
Personal Note: This is not, and was never intended to be, an objective, unbiased review of an NFL contest. It is instead a glimpse into the emotional ride experienced by the average Colt fan at game time. My Homerism switch is engaged and turned up to eleven. With that in mind, I invite you to join me as we re-live the highs and lows of the 2009 Indianapolis Colts season.
Today’s Game: Week 12 – Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans
Setting The Stage
- It’s Thanksgiving weekend, and the Colts come into the game 10-0 on the season and 14-1 all-time against the Texans. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has 34 career touchdowns vs Houston, the most of any team. The Texans, at 5-5 and led by quarterback Matt Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson, sport the 30th ranked rushing offense, and are desperate for a shot at a wildcard berth. Dwight Freeney has an abdomen injury and didn’t make the trip, so Raheem Brock starts and Josh Thomas gets quite a bit of playing time. Manning has a sore glute, Kelvin Hayden is out again, and Charlie Johnson is playing with a bad foot.
- The Field: Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX. The roof is open on an overcast, 75 degree day.
- The Crowd: 70,990 in attendance. The crowd is pretty savvy; they know when to be loud and when to be quiet. One thing is obvious; they don’t like the Colts. Haha… sure, lady; your team is Number One.

Today’s Game: Week 9 – Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts
Setting The Stage
- The Colts come into the game 7-0, one of two remaining undefeated teams. Houston quarterback Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson lead the Texans who enter the game at 5-3 and boast one of the most productive offenses in the league along with a surprisingly stingy defense; one which has forced more three-and-outs than any other team thus far. Schaub leads the league in passing yards and touchdown passes, and Andre Johnson leads the league in receiving yards. Colts injuries include Bob Sanders, Tyjuan Hagler (out for the season), and Kelvin Hayden. Philip Wheeler gets the start for Hagler, and for the first time, Kyle DeVan gets the start at right guard in place of Mike Pollak. To replace Hagler on the roster, Cody Glenn is called up from the practice squad.
- The Field: The roof is open on a 70 degree day at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis IN. It’s another blindingly sunny day with deep shadows in one corner; moving slowly toward mid-field as the game progresses.
- The Crowd: The announcers mention crowd noise several times today… both in terms of how loud it gets when the defense is on the field and how quiet it gets when the offense is out there. Savvy crowd… they grow ‘em smart here in Indiana. Oh, wait…
