Did Injuries Affect the 2010 Colts?
Jan 19th
Colts fans are stuck in limbo. The Super Bowl is still two weeks away, so talking about the off-season seems premature. Before fans get to that point, it is worthwhile to take a look back at 2010 to gauge where the Colts franchise will be when the draft and summer activities roll around.
One of the biggest impacts on Indianapolis in 2010 was the unprecedented number of injuries the team had to play through. The Colts placed 18 players on Injured Reserve, and two others on the injured/waived list — including Taj Smith, who rejoined the Colts. This number does not include injured players who missed multiple games throughout the year, but still managed to hold onto a roster spot.
Below are three ways to examine Indy’s injuries in 2010.
Jets v. Colts: After Review (Wild Card Weekend)
Jan 10th
After a painful sixteen game regular season — rife with injuries, frustrating slumps, and a lack of identity — the Colts 2010 effort officially ended Saturday night after a last minute drive that was capped by a Jets field goal. What makes the loss difficult to take — even though most fans realized the team’s playoff berth was an admirable accomplishment in its own right — is that the Colts should have won.
The initial fan reaction to the game has been all over the board, with fingers pointing in different directions. Some argue that the defense is responsible for the loss because they allowed the Jets to keep the ball for a vast majority of the second half, and yielded over 150 yards on the ground.
Others blame the Indianapolis special teams units for making costly mistakes and allowing long returns, specifically Antonio Cromartie’s long return on the final drive of the game that allowed the Jets to have a short field for a field goal try.
Still others insist that Coach Caldwell is primarily responsible for calling an ill-advised timeout with less than 30 seconds to go, which allowed the Jets offense to get their heads together for a back-breaking first down play that made shaky place kicker Nick Folk’s job much easier.
The reality is, all of these fans are right to a degree, but none of them — even taken together — completely explain how the Colts managed to let this game slip away. More >
Jets v. Colts, and Things of that Nature (Wild Card Weekend)
Jan 8th
The Indianapolis Colts are going to face a familiar playoff opponent in the wild card round of the 2010 playoffs. The New York Jets have to come back to Lucas Oil Stadium and will certainly have redemption squarely in their sights.
Rex Ryan is an emotion-filled coach who will likely have his team seeing red, hungry for payback after the Colts kept the gang green from its first Super Bowl berth since Super Bowl III in 1968. Players like Darelle Revis, Mark Sanchez, and Shonn Greene will likely lead the rally call to come into Indianapolis and trounce the smaller faster team that bested them just under one year ago.
One thing that could play in the Colts favor is that quarterback Peyton Manning and his primary receiver Reggie Wayne got a good look at the Jets in the playoffs last year. There is little doubt that there will be adjustments on both sides of the ball by both teams but with a crowd that has proved capable of making it very difficult for teams to play during the Colts late-season playoff push, some might think the Colts have an advantage. A Fan Salute to the 2010 Indianapolis Colts
Jan 5th
With a win against the Titans, the Colts managed to overcome unprecedented team injuries and their worst five game series since 2002 for a NFL record (tie) ninth consecutive playoff berth, and their seventh AFC South Championship in the last eight years. Peyton Manning was able to get through his toughest stretch of games since his rookie year and somehow Indy has managed to enter January with the three seed in the AFC.
It is extremely important for Colts fans to step back and think about the gravity of this accomplishment. Frankly, this team had no business overcoming all of the adversity it has faced in a sixteen game season. More >
Wednesday Injury Report: Colts v. Raiders
Dec 22nd
By now it’s been widely reported that WR Austin Collie has been placed on IR, and while we will miss him sorely, it is a move that is being applauded around the league, not the least of whom by the Colts fans, who know how much more difficult a playoff run will be without him.
Get well, Austin!
There is some encouraging injury news today, though, as Joseph Addai returned FULL to practice! Mike Hart and Clint Session also saw some practice time. Their status for the game is uncertain, but it’s nice to see that there may be a chance for them to return.

In the Training Room: Colts’ WR Austin Collie Suffers Another Concussion
Dec 21st
After sitting out 3 games to recover from previous concussion symptoms, Austin Collie roared back to the field on Sunday, catching 8 passes for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns. Unfortunately, he would make another early exit as Jacksonville LB Daryl Smith’s forearm caught Collie’s neck awkwardly on an attempted seam route, resulting in yet another concussion.
One of the debates raging amongst fans and analysts right now is whether this was Collie’s second or third concussion. The team has been careful to classify this as his second, labelling his exit from the Patriots game as being due to a recurrence of symptoms from the original concussion suffered in the Eagles game. There are fans who believe that, because Collie was medically cleared to play in the Patriots game, an early exit due to concussion-like symptoms is tantamount to a separate concussion, thus making this most recent one his third.
To all of these arguments, I say… what does it matter? More >
Quick Reaction: Colts 34, Jags 24
Dec 19th
Highlights:
- The refs played a larger part in this game than anyone would appreciate… on both sides of the ball.
- RB Donald Brown showed what he can do when he has good blocking in front of him (14 carries for 129 yards and 1 touchdown)
- I am heartbroken for WR Austin Collie, who after returning in a big way at the beginning of the game (8 catches for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns), suffered yet another game-ending concussion. Inexplicably, the team allowed him to return to the sidelines late in the game where he moped in his street clothes.
- The Colts once again won the turnover battle, giving up zero, while the Jags committed two – a Garrard interception by Antoine Bethea, and a blocking-into-the-receiver penalty with the bounce-off-the-receiver-into-the-Colts-hands turnover on a punt.
- As usual, the game came down to some nail-biting moments when the Jags scored a touchdown with 1:59 left to close the gap to 3. Coach Caldwell made a great call taking a time out just before Scobee squibbed the kick straight ahead on what appeared to be an attempt to catch the Colts’ line off guard.
- On the ensuing attempt, on-again off-again Colts’ LB Tyjuan Hagler grabbed the short squib kick by Scobee and ran it 41 yards for a touchdown to ice the game.
- The Colts are now first in the AFC South (on tie-breakers) and continue their playoff hunt next week in Oaktown (where I will be reporting live!)
Thursday Injury Report: Jaguars v. Colts
Dec 16th
The injury report is getting cleaner, and not a moment too soon. It appears that Austin Collie is headed for a return, as is Kelvin Hayden. The Colts will need as much fire power as they can get with what amounts to their 2nd playoff game of the 2010 season coming up (I counted last week’s game as the 1st because it was at that point).
Phil B. Wilson of Indy Star that we will see Joseph Addai, Mike Hart, Charlie Johnson or Clint Session on Sunday in anything other than track suits.
