Addressing the Colts Cornerback Roster in 2011
Jan 27th
Entering the 2010 season, the Indianapolis Colts faced uncertainty at cornerback.
-2010 third round draft pick Kevin Thomas suffered a season-ending knee-injury during rookie camp.
-Veteran Tim Jennings departed the team and ended up in Chicago.
-The only options behind starters Kelvin Hayden and Jerraud Powers were aging veteran DeShea Townsend (first year in the Colts system), second-year veteran Jacob Lacey, and undrafted free agents Brandon King, Jordan Hemby, and Thad Turner.
As soon as preseason ended, Colts President Bill Polian traded a draft pick to the Washington Redskins for young veteran Justin Tryon. Tryon ended up starting Week 1, and filled in as the most reliable backup corner on the Colts roster for the remainder of the season. More >
In the Training Room: How the Colts’ Injuries Compare to the Packers’
Jan 22nd
Tomorrow, the Green Bay Packers will be in Chicago to take on the Bears in the NFC Championship Game. The media have highlighted the Packers’ long injury list (15 players on IR), and earlier this week Football Outsiders published a games-lost-by-starters statistic showing that the Pack lost a total of 83 starter-games in 2010. The statistic also estimates that the Colts lost 89 starter-games – a significant number to be sure, but not significantly more than the Packers. It’s fair to wonder why the Packers have been able to recover enough from injuries to make it to the NFCCG, while the Colts are watching the rest of the playoffs on TV. This post offers a perspective.
Navigating the Colts 2011 Off-Season
Jan 7th
Although the Colts are heading into the playoffs and will not have to worry about new contracts, free agency, and draft planning until after their playoff run ends, once it does things will start happening fast. With all of the players who have contracts ending this season, it will be important to make good choices in order to keep a very talented football team intact.
One thing about any off-season is the chance that difficult decisions will have to be made about players for whom fans have a great deal of loyalty. That is the unfortunate nature of the business of football and those kinds of decisions and observations will be included in what this writer believes is the best direction for the Colts leading up to the 2011 season.
The most important thing to do to start this process is to identify which players require new contracts in order to play football in 2011, and which players currently have contracts that are not reflective of their value to the team.
The players who will need new contracts in order to return to the Colts in 2011 are listed below, by position. More >
Why the Colts Future is not in Doubt
Dec 2nd
15 comments
With Indianapolis struggling recently, a lot of fans are questioning the team’s future. Many complain about recent drafts and believe the young talent will be incapable of replacing the perennial Pro Bowl and future Hall of Fame talent that is starting to age.
This negative perspective is premature. As long as Peyton Manning is healthy and playing at a very high level in the NFL, the Colts future is safe. With that in mind, it makes sense to focus on the players who represent the team’s future, consider their talent level, and where that talent can take the Colts moving forward. More >
In the Training Room: How Much Better Could the Colts Be… and When?
Nov 22nd
Injuries have been the unfortunate undertone – or maybe even the overtone – of this season. It’s a dangerous game to ask “what if” and tie a player to it… “What if Bullitt had been on the field against Woodhead?” “What if Sanders had been in against Vick?” The Colts preach “next man up,” and expect newcomers to execute.
However, injuries have been at least part of the story in each of the Colts’ four losses, where they were without the following players:
- v. Texans – Glenn, Lacey. C. Johnson, Saturday still recovering from injuries. Gonzo, Sanders injured during game.
- @ Jaguars – Brown, Conner, Garcon, Gonzo (later on IR), King, Richard, Sanders. Bullitt injured during game (later on IR)
- @ Eagles – Addai, Eldridge, Hart, A. Johnson, Powers, Sanders, Session, Tryon. Brackett, Collie injured during game.
- @ Patriots – Addai, Brackett, Hart, Sanders, Session, Tryon. Collie re-injured during game.
So what can Colts fans realistically expect in terms of the return of each of the above players? Bullitt, Gonzo and King are obviously out of play, as they are already on IR. Several have already come back, including Brown, Conner, Eldridge, Garcon, Glenn, A. Johnson, Lacey, and Powers. After the jump is my guess at the picture for the rest. Remember that I am not a doctor, nor do I have any information above that which has already been made public.
Game Stats: Chiefs v. Colts

During the bye week, it is good to look back at some of our previous games and get some perspective, and possibly look for the silver lining in our performances so far this year. Despite a chorus of pundits hailing the Chiefs defense, this game was more accurately an attempt for the offense to maim itself. Between poor performances by Ryan Diem and Mike Pollak, and the combination of Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, and Dallas Clark catching a paltry 50.0% of their passes, the offense would have made the Buffalo Bills defense look like it was playing Curtis Painter again.
Don’t fret because there is some good news. First, the defense stepped up in their usual fashion… just when we desperately needed them. We are still whiffing on tackles too much, but there are plenty of encouraging signs. The other piece of good news is that the offense was at a statistical low-point, which means it should swing back toward the great Colts offense the league has come to expect. This isn’t guaranteed, but considering Manning almost always comes back with a vengeance after a poor performance, and the numerous miscues are so out of character for this offense, one can’t help but believe that things have to be looking up from here (statistically and physically). In the Training Room: Colts Wide Receiver Austin Collie
Oct 22nd

It was reported today that Austin Collie underwent thumb surgery, and there is no established time frame for his return. In watching the game highlights on NFL.com, I thought I pegged the time of his injury at his touchdown catch. He adjusts his gloves immediately following the catch, and pulls at his thumb a bit. But he returned to the game to catch three more passes for 40 yards, so it’s unlikely that he was injured before then. No information has been released in terms of the exact nature of the injury, but two possibilities include broken thumb or a Grade 3 thumb sprain.
